Deep Blue is a short student film from students at the LCC. We are looking for hardworking actors to star in our Final Major Project. This film is about a dysfunctional English family wrapped in a web of secrecy. The plot revolves around a young boy with an obsession for whales discovering something the family have been hiding from him for a long time. With elements of Kitchen Sink Realism, Comedy and Drama, this is a story which looks into the complexities and difficulties of family life whilst still retaining a relatively light-hearted atmosphere.

We are looking for actors who preferably have had previous experience in short films, who are prepared to work hard and immerse themselves into the roles. If you think you are right for the part then please get in contact.

Kai

Young boy growing up in a dysfunctional family. Shy but inquisitive. He’s left to his own devices by a family that pays him little tension. Reserved. His character seems almost obsessed with whales. He is quite intelligent but not precocious. Brought up in a middle class family.

This character is supposed to be 15 years old so if you look younger than your age then that’s preferable.

A few years ago Andrew lost his wife and since then he has been lying to his son about her. Since Ren, his wife, passed away he hasn’t been the same and doesn’t seem to fully be living his own life. His life seems stagnant. He does love and care for his son but it seems he doesn’t quite know how to be his father without Ren there.

Art Therapist. She is quite lonely as she lives on her own and so often finds herself at their house.She does care about Kai and Andrew but shows it in a way that is not necessarily appreciated. To the annoyance of this conservative household, her persistent pestering and remedies cause some friction in the family. Often says what first comes into her head. Ren’s sister.

Grandma Irene

The matriarch of the family. She, much like Dennis is very conservative. She never took fondly to Kai’s mother, Ren due to her upbringing and background. Has an underlying fear of letting go of her son, Andrew. She seems neat in her presentation but very old fashioned. Slightly bigoted. Can’t stand any sight of mess.
