Inviting actors to audition for “Ex Nihilo” – VCA Masters Film and Television

Ex Nihilo is a short film depicting a frail Franciscan Monk, who is tempted to fabricate his own stigmata.

Casting: 20 – 23 April at Victorian College of the Arts (Southbank)
Shoot dates: 6 May at VCA (Southbank) and Melbourne University, Parkville

SYNOPSIS:
An young Monk, Bernard, must grapple with the moral dilemma of discovering that his mentor and guide (Pius) has in a religious ecstasy, fabricated his own stigmata in order to experience the passion and suffering of Christ. However Bernard’s decision as to whether he should protect the old man, inevitably undermines his faith in both God and Pius. The film is a short, highly visual and stylised production with a sombre and uncertain tone. It is finally, a dramatic retelling of events which occurred in the early 20th century.

Pius

Pius is a frail Monk, who has dedicate his life to the service of others and the church. Believing he has experienced religious visions for much of his life, and despite his wisdom, has become obsessed with Christ’s suffering and the strict daily practice of a Monk. From his frail state or out of a sense of deception and pride, he cuts his palms to feel such suffering, only to also cement his place as a religious figure that will not be forgotten.

Bernard

Bernard is a young novice in the order who has often looked up to Pius for spiritual guidance. He is principled, inquisitive yet stern in his practice. Bernard represents the possibility of skepticism and uncertainty once the foundations of his spiritual practice has been undermined by others.
