Our story follows Wilson, a salesman in a paper company. Wilson lives alone in a big, dim and grey building in London. He follows the same routine day in, day out… Until one day his routine is broken by the arrival of a young lady in the flat next door: Sophie, a passionate musician who works as clerk in a supermarket.
Wilson takes to Sophie immediately and is even more intrigued by her when he finds out that she plays wonderful music. However, Wilson’s fears are bigger than his desires and he struggles to overcome them. He is too shy, too insecure and too scared to talk to Sophie. Instead, he observes her from behind his door, through the viewer, and listens to her music from his living room. He falls in love with Sophie, and the sound of her saxophone.
It is through music that Wilson is finally able to connect with Sophie and fulfil his yearning to communicate with her. He takes out his old cello and they converse for the first time through the voice of their instruments. At first, they simply exchange a few notes and chords until they become more comfortable with each other and begin playing for longer, together in harmony. Their first rendezvous.
The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos, Her by Spike Jonze, Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock and Barton Fink by the Coen Brothers, are all great influences of the story and the visual style of our film, Rendezvous.
