The Creators

Sneaky Pete is Amazon’s new crime drama series created by David Shore and Bryan Cranston.  It is about a man named Marius Josipovic and his life as a con artist.  David Shore is famous for the creation of the long-running TV show, House.  Bryan Cranston is famous for his role as the father in Malcolm in the Middle and as the infamous Walter White in Breaking Bad.  Together with Amazon Studios, they set out to create a unique drama that would captivate audiences.  They wanted to create a show that movie and television lovers would binge until they finished every episode in one sitting.

The Reviews

With Sneaky Pete, they created just that.  Sneaky Pete has made a huge splash in the television industry after its first season released exclusively on Amazon Video on January 13th, 2017.  The show has not only drawn the attention of viewers, but critics are rating it higher than many expected.  On Rotten Tomatoes, Sneaky Pete currently has a perfect 100% rating from critics with 21/21 professional critics approving.  The audience score sits at 90% with the average user rating the first season 4.5/5.

The Story

So what makes this show so good? The show is receiving tons of attention for its unique story and captivating characters.  It is about a released convict who adopts the identity of his former cell mate in order to avoid his past life.  The main character is played by Giovanni Ribisi and he absolutely nails the role as a convict trying to act as natural as possible in a strange environment.  He now lives on a farm outside of New York City under the alias of Pete Murphy.  Pete Murphy is the name of his former cell mate.  Pete used to live on this farm until he ran away at age eight.  His family hadn’t heard from him until Marius showed up pretending to be Pete.  The story seems confusing, but it comes together masterfully and creates tension that is rarely seen in television.

Impact on the Industry

This show is very pivotal to the television industry because it is not produced by Netflix.  Amazon Studios is not nearly as well-known as the streaming powerhouse Netflix, but with more shows like Sneaky Pete they are bound to get the attention they deserve.  Watch Sneaky Pete on Amazon now and look forward to future casting calls in what will inevitably be a season two.
