Titled GET FIT, the exhibition at Turf Projects is centred around the formal qualities of exercise; through repetition, the group dynamic and the cultural influences derived from films such as 1977s Pumping Iron (featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger). For my particular work in the show I am focusing more on the relationship between the mind and body, and utilising the pilates/yoga format to investigate consciousness and the self within these environments. I plan to record the work through binaural recording, and to have the text recited in a whispering tone. Binaural mics are slightly unusual in that there are two microphones, that look like headphones. I will wear the headphones, and you’ll be required to whisper around me – which I can appreciate all sounds rather odd! But the effect is quite striking, making you feel like there’s someone in the room, when there’s actually no one there.
No theatrics are required within the voice, just ‘straightforward’ whispering into the mic.
