Technical, Admin, Directing, Wardrobe, and Stage Management Internships


The Summer Theatre of New Canaan offers a professional internship program for career track theatre arts college students and recent graduates who would like practical experience in their field of interest.  All interns will work side by side professionals and will actively participate in delivering a theatrical season.

We are currently seeking interns in the following concentrations:

The directing/education intern will serve as the assistant director for one of our Theatre for Young Audience shows and assist the assistant director in the mainstage. The directing/ education intern works closely with the artistic director organizing, planning, and running each of our education programs (DramaRama- a program for students with special needs, High School Theatre Intensive, and the middle school Jr. Company).

Stage Management
We will select two stage manager interns. These interns work closely with our equity stage manager on the mainstage production and will be eligible to receive EMC points. Stage manager interns will also serve as assistant stage managers on our Theatre for Young Audience shows. These interns will also stage manage one of the education programs.

The wardrobe/costume intern will assist the costume designer and the wardrobe shop supervisor with designing, pulling, measuring, building, altering and maintaining costumes for all of our shows. The costume/ wardrobe intern will also have some run crew responsibilities. This intern should have experience in costume shop stitching as well as costume construction.

Technical Theatre (Carpentry, Electrical/ Lighting, Sound, Technical Direction)
We will select 3-4 technical interns, each with their own concentrations. We are an outdoor theatre that performs under an all weather open tent, stage and sets that are installed and constructed at the beginning of each season, all of our technical interns are a big part of that installation. Once the tent and stage is operational the tech interns start working within their chosen concentration. There may be some cross over between diciplines. Each of these interns work closely with our production manager and professional staff on all of our shows. 

Theatre Administration (Marketing, Social Media, Company Management)
We will select 3 admin interns. Admin interns split their time between their concentration, box office, and house management duties. Each intern will learn how to run and manage a box office and front of house team. Admin interns will also learn about marketing, advertising, press releases, social media strategies, and company management. Admin interns will leave with an understanding of how a not-for-profit theatre operates. 

For information regarding housing: Housing is available although quite limited. Admission preference is given to those with their own housing who live within a reasonable commuting distance. All applicants must provide their own transportation.
