Technical Director – Summer Season 2017
The Lake Dillon Theatre Company, an Equity theatre in Silverthorne, CO is currently accepting applications for a Technical Director to oversee the 2017 Summer Season. Productions include: SISTER ACT THE MUSICAL (opens June 23), GHOST THE MUSICAL (opens July 1), and NOISES OFF (opens September 1).
SUMMER SEASON 2017: The Technical Director will be in charge of building, painting, and implementing all scenic elements for the productions. A team of carpenters/scenic painters will be on contract for 8 weeks (May 29 – July 23) during the heavy builds. The TD will be needed to finalize the build and oversee load-in/tech for NOISES OFF through its opening on September 1.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Build all sets. Ensure sets are painted and furnished as per discussions with the artistic director, director, and designers. Each set is to be ready and loaded in before Sunday of each tech week and should reflect high artistic quality and professional attention to detail. All sets must be maintained throughout the production run. Any repairs needed during the course of the production are to be administered before the next scheduled performance.
SCENIC DESIGN / DRAFTING: If Scenic Design requires, some refinement or drafting of shop drawings may be required. TD may also serve as Scenic Designer for the LAB SOLO SERIES studio shows outlined below. Provide drawings of a set’s ground plan, frontal elevations, color elevations, or otherwise to the artistic director and director prior to the first rehearsal.
DEPARTMENT SUPERVISION: Each department will have a Supervisor who will work closely with the TD during the production process. Lights/Sound: TD will ensure all lighting and sound for each production/event meets all technical requirements per discussions with the artistic director, director, and artistic team, as well as overseeing lighting and sound plot maintenance throughout the course of the run.
TECHNICAL PROCESS: TD must be present and supervise all technical rehearsals with artistic director, director, stage manager, and actors until opening night.
BUDGETS: Track expenditures for scenic shop as well as supervise/execute purchases on company accounts and cards of raw materials, theatrical supplies, tool repairs/replacements, etc.
MAINTENANCE: Supervise maintenance of all theatre equipment, including tools, lights, dimmers, sound and light boards, spotlights and any other show-related equipment. Coordinate repairs or replacement as needed. Maintain the shop and backstage area in a neat and orderly fashion. Facilitate the storage and maintenance of properties, set pieces, furnishings, and all technical equipement concerning changeovers, special events, workshops and other coordinated events.
STRIKE / CHANGEOVER: Plan and oversee all set strikes and changeovers of productions and special events. Supervise all crews and volunteer labor in these strikes and conduct such activity in an organized and friendly manner.
PRE-PRODUCTION: Attend all production meetings as needed.
LAB SOLO SERIES: The LDTC also hosts a series of one-man shows in its smaller lab venue. TD will be responsible for the design and build of these three scenic designs of the 10×10 stage in this venue. (Buyer & Cellar: June 30 – July 09) (Pretty Fire: August 11 – August 20) (Grounded: September 22 – October 1 (built in advance of contract end date))
QUALIFICATIONS: BA or BFA (required) or Masters degree (preferred) in technical theatre. Strong carpentry skills is a must, strong scenic painting skills is preferred. Display a positive attitude with a focus on people and our community.
Demonstrate professional conduct at all times. Strong leadership skills. Comfortable working with both hired crew and volunteers of varying experience and abilities. Proficient oral and written communication skills. Ability to decipher drafting plates, elevations, ground plans, and other design elements whether hand written or via technology like VectorWorks, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMAND: This job requires climbing stairs, using ladders, scissor lifts, and power tools. There is also a certain amount of lifting and carrying of weights of up to approximately one hundred pounds.
