Almost Random Theatre has just concluded a playwriting competition based round a theme of veganism. One criteria was that every play must have at least one 50+ year old in it. The plays were to be between 5 and 30 minutes long.

What we are looking for is versatility. Look round the theatre site, especially at the previous Valentines Competition. The winning play was performed twice in every venue – by different actors! (Oxford, London, Poland) Many of the plays were filmed (all 19 of the London plays were) which is ideal for showreels etc.

So what we are looking for is actors that are prepared to adopt different persona, able and willing to improvise (probably for the 5 minute plays) and, most importantly are RELIABLE.

Auditions will be on the 13th March in Oxford. Rehearsals will be 20, 27 March; 3,10, 17, 24 April; 8, 15, 22, 29 May and 5 June. (Sundays)

There will be numerous opportunities to act in a variety of different plays – these Vegan Plays but also others we are advertising.

Performances are likely to be in May/June (Oxford) and June (London).

NO EXPENSES will be paid.
NO PAY FOR PERFORMANCE

BUT there will be PROFIT SHARING. (The theatre gives all its share of profits to charity)

What will actors get out of this?

A challenge
Profit sharing
Variety
Showreel
Experience
Fun!

Please spend ages looking through the website and see what ART has been doing these past 2 years – performing abroad (unpaid) Business Theatre (paid) Schools (expenses only) appearing on national TV, local newspapers, helping others but perhaps most importantly, perfoming, performing, performing.

This play is called ‘Coming Out’ and lasts for about 25 minutes.

Coming out is a short play about one young man’s struggle with explaining to his family that he is a vegan. It is a sort of spoof take on the classic “coming out” you might associate with one’s sexuality – but now pretty much everyone is cool with that stuff so in this reality it’s now things like veganism that causes this oddball family to struggle to come to terms with.

Set during Nan’s birthday party, the story brings together the Weatherbys, a family rife with a turbulent ancestory full of murderers, freakshows and circus performers but clearly nothing has ever taken this family quite unawares as Kevin’s turn to veganism after a lengthy time travelling abroad building orphanages. The story builds to a rather surreal and unlikely ending where an exorcist is called and there is a death. But will the oven get fixed? And how long does it take to defrost a whole turkey?

The play aims to bring the concept of veganism into wider discussion – to dispel common myths and also to probe – in a light-hearted way – into a common and irrational dismissal of anyone attempting an alternative lifestyle and why this seems to irritate people who don’t want to give up meat or agree that there is an alternative solution, even when the facts are staring them in the face. In party this was inspired by my own turn to veganism and the perils this brings in any discussion with anyone not convinced by veganism as to why anyone would turn to veganism and how infuriating it can be to have to feel like you have to explain yourself the whole time.

A key element of this play is that there will only be THREE actors BUT there are TEN characters:

KEVIN, NAN, TOM & ANNIE
MUM, AUNT BESSIE
DAD, MAD UNCLE JIM, PRIEST, OVEN MAN

That’s why we stress versatility!
